From SEO to AIO: The New Rules of Brand Visibility in the Age of AI

1 1

Search engine algorithms have been a main platform for brand visibility since the dawn of Google. As artificial intelligence (AI) changes how those algorithms work, brands are fighting to be seen and mentioned by AI responses.

AI-referred web traffic has surged more than 500% from 2024 to 2025, and analysts expect AI searches to overtake organic searches by 2030. Even more telling, website visitors coming from AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini convert at a rate of 14–17%, compared with Google’s 3%. People increasingly trust AI systems to explain, compare, and recommend products and services — and they act on those recommendations.

For marketing and PR teams, the implication is clear: Content must now be optimized not only for Google’s crawler but also for AI bots to read, understand, and cite — while still serving the human reader. This shift from search engine optimization (SEO) to artificial intelligence optimization (AIO) means brands that don’t adapt risk disappearing from the places where buyers are making their decisions.

As we tell our clients, if you’ve invested in SEO, you already have a strong foundation. But AIO introduces new expectations around clarity, authority, structure, and trust. Below are six practices we recommend to build your SEO while preparing your brand for AI‑driven search discovery. Fortunately, these techniques also work well for human readers, and when paired with an excellent user experience (UX), can directly impact your website’s ability to guide your human prospects through the buyer’s journey from aware, to consider, to buy.

Assess Your Messaging and Content Gaps

AI systems are literal readers. They don’t infer or “connect the dots” the way humans do. If your website doesn’t clearly explain what you do, what it means, and why it matters in a synced way, AI won’t cite you, and your brand visibility will suffer. Look at your website through the eyes of someone who knows nothing about your company.  What’s missing to give a clear, complete picture of your products or services and the value to the reader?

At Brandwidth Solutions, we support clients through this process by conducting an audit of their existing content, followed by gap analysis to identify new content opportunities aligned with strategic priorities and industry trends. Filling content gaps often translates to big gains in both SEO and AIO visibility.

Another factor to consider is balancing the needs of the human reader with those of AI. For example, many science and technology companies create content targeted toward their human audience: people with advanced degrees. However, SEO and AIO read at 8th and 6th grade levels, respectively.

One strategy we recommend to help our clients address that comprehension gap is to create a white paper written to the education level of their intended human audience (e.g., those with bachelor’s or higher degrees), then post it on the client website accompanied by a bullet-point summary written at a 6th-grade level for AI and SE readability. This strategy also addresses the inability of SEO and AI crawlers to read content that is gated or posted as a PDF.

Be Consistent for Better Brand Visibility

Inconsistency is one of the biggest credibility risks for AI. Conflicting product names, outdated addresses, or mismatched descriptions signal unreliability, which AI considers red flags. Because websites are often pieced together over time, with multiple contributors, it’s important to frequently and regularly review content for consistency. Inconsistent messaging erodes trust for both AI and human audiences.

Follow EEAT Best Practices for AIO

EEAT — expertise, experience, authority, and trust — matters for SEO, but it’s even more critical if you want AI platforms to cite your content. Some tips to establish EEAT:

  • Attribute articles to identifiable subject-matter experts with real credentials, rather than to a generic team or no author at all.
  • For statistics, link reliable sources and include the year of publication.
  • Publish thought leadership articles on priority topics, both externally and on the company website.
  • Add short case studies, testimonials, and firsthand experience to your product or service pages.

Lead with Originality and First-Party Insight

AI doesn’t like generic or derivative content. It prefers unique insights that demonstrate firsthand experience and expertise. Here are some tips for increasing brand visibility and incorporating originality in your web content:

  • Include first-party data, research, or statistics.
  • Add case studies and real-world examples.
  • Quote subject-matter experts — from your team, clients, or third-party sources.
  • Periodically refresh older content with new insights, adding a header with the date the content was updated.

Write for Query Fan-Out and Snippet Extraction

This is one of the biggest differences between SEO and AIO. When someone asks an AI platform a question, the model breaks it into multiple sub‑questions — a process called query fan‑out. AI then looks for clean, self‑contained chunks of content (or snippets) that answer each sub-question. To optimize content for this process:

  • Begin by querying AI platforms on the topic you want to optimize. See how different platforms structure the answers, and make sure you cover those subtopics in your content.
  • Break content into short, scannable chunks with clear subheadings.
  • Lead with direct answers to a question, then add nuance, if needed.
  • Use bullet points to create clean, quotable snippets that AI can easily extract.

SEO and AIO Technical Details

When optimizing content for AI to increase brand visibility, don’t forget seemingly mundane technical details, which can make all the difference in whether AI interprets and cites your content. Many SEO best practices still apply, but AIO adds new expectations around structure and machine readability:

  • Ensure fast load times, avoid “block robots” tags, and use descriptive linking (rather than generic instructions like “Read more” or “Learn more”).
  • Add structured data (in a fixed format, such as tables) and schema markup (coding that signals data) to make data easy to read and interpret by AI bots.
  • Summarize infographics and images in text so AI can read them.
  • Use mainstream website content management system (CMS) platforms, such as WordPress, Wix, or Weebly, that adopt new AI‑search standards quickly, rather than custom-built systems.

SEO has reshaped websites around what search engines require to read and understand content. Now, to reach your audience effectively, content must be easily scanned, interpreted, and cited by AI platforms. Although it may feel like the playbook is constantly changing, the same practices that make your site AI‑friendly can strengthen your SEO and improve user experience, as well.
